History

Year 8 learners will follow the recently revised national curriculum for History.

Learners will study three main themes, which will run across year 8 and 9 with different topics.

Power & Democracy:

• Overview of Kings 1066-1649

• Case Study: King John

• Case Study: Charles I

• Restoration

• Great Britain (Acts of Union)

• Decline of the monarchy (1770-1830)

Conflict & Cooperation:

• Empire (world in 1914)

• Causes of WWI

• Military front

• Home Front

• Establishment of the League of Nations

Persecution:

• ‘Persecution’/Empire review

• Aztec civilisation

• Spanish Empire

• Effects on Spain

• Effects on Mexico

The course will enable learners to tackle key questions relating to the different themes:

Power & Democracy:

• What is history?

• How was medieval England ruled?

• What did King John do wrong?

• Why did Charles I lose his head in 1649?

• What is Great Britain?

• Why did the monarchy lose its power 1770 – 1830?

Conflict & Cooperation:

• What did the world look like in 1914?

• How did 2 bullets cause 20 million deaths?

• How terrible was life at the military front?

• Did life in Britain change from 1914 – 1918?

• Cooperation: Preventing future conflict

Persecution:

• Empire and Persecution: hand in hand?

• How would a Spaniard describe the Aztecs?

• Why was having an empire important to the Spanish?

• How significant were the conquistadors to the Aztecs?

• Conquistadors: profit or persecution?

Homework is set once per fortnight.
