In technology this year you will be working in four material areas, Food, Graphics, Resistant Materials and Textiles. You will spend approximately 18 weeks in food and textiles and then move into Graphics and Resistant Materials for the remainder of the year (and vice versa for the other half of the year group). Students will be given a task from their homework booklet or a stand-alone task to support classroom learning as and when appropriate to the course.

The work over the year will be based on the theme– Designing for Clients.
In Graphics you will:
Develop drawing and rendering skills.
Consider global issues as you work with computer aided design (CAD) and electronics to design and make a bedside light to celebrate world “Festivals of Light”.
Use CAD to create Pro Desktop models of various given items.
Students will be given homework booklets. In Graphics topics will be:
Homework 1: Isometric Drawing and Rendering.
Homework 2: Isometric Drawing and Rendering.
Homework 3: Material rendering exercises.
Homework 4: Exploded Drawings.
Homework 5: Exploded Drawings.
Extension: Candle holder design project.

In Resistant Materials you will:
Learn about structures and forces acting upon them.
Work with wood when you design and make a book support.
Learn and apply knowledge of mechanisms to design and make a novelty moving coat hook.
As part of the coat hook project you will learn to plan your projects in detail and record progress in order to self evaluate.
Homework Topics:
Homework 1: Types of Bridges.
Homework 2: Natural and man-made structures.
Homework 3: Isometric drawing of book support and evaluation of it in use.
Homework 4: Types of motion.
Homework 5: Mechanisms mood board.
Extension: Mechanisms in the home.

In food you will:
Learn about nutrition.
Understand the importance of a healthy diet and apply knowledge of nutrition to modify diet and dishes to make them more healthy.
Develop practical skills using starch based foods and fruit and vegetables.
Work in groups to plan, make and evaluate a starter and dessert that could be sold in the school gigabite.
Homework topics will cover the following:
Week 1: Analysis of a day’s meals.
Week 2: Eating habits.
Week 3: Cereals.
Week 4: Rice.
Week 5: Pasta.

In Textiles you will:
Learn about fabric construction.
Use fabric paint and dyes to put colours and patterns onto fabric.
Use different methods of incorporating embellishments onto a fabric item.
Design and make a cushion for a client to include different printing techniques.
Homework topics will cover the following:
Week 1: Ways of decorating fabrics.
Week 2: Colours and mood.
Week 3: Properties of fibres and fabrics.
Week 4: Cotton.
Week 5: Environmental issues and textiles.
