Physical Education

In the Hermitage PE department, we wish all students to be involved in a variety of activities. Our lessons and extra curricular clubs provide students with the opportunity / encouragement to enjoy and improve in their chosen sport. Our main aims as a department is to:

1) Encourage 100% participation and active involvement by all students in all activities

2) To allow students to develop at their own pace, providing encouragement to help motivate students to achieve their full potential

3) We all students the opportunity to develop their sporting strength through a variety of sports in both lessons and extra curricular clubs.

PE Kit

The hermitage PE department operates a full kit policy, meaning that students must be in full PE kit even if they are excused from the practical session. This enables students to take part in other areas such as coaching and umpiring. The following kit is essential for ALL PE lessons:

• Red Hermitage sweatshirt

• White Hermitage polo shirt

• Navy PE shorts and/or black Hermitage tracksuit bottoms

• Navy PE socks.

• Outdoor lessons – trainers/football boots (where appropriate) /

• Indoor lessons – CLEAN trainers

• All long hair to be tied back – boys and girls

• PLAIN navy blue or black hat / gloves in winter – outdoors only A black Hermitage coat may also be worn in inclement weather for outdoor lessons.

• NO scarves to be worn in any PE lessons

• NO jewellery

• NO chewing

We would further advise that students playing rugby and football wear boots, those playing hockey and rugby wear a gum shield and those playing hockey and football wear shin pads. Students should bring a plastic bag to put wet/dirty kit in particularly for outdoor lessons. In the winter and/or wet weather it is also advisable to bring spare socks/ underwear. There are shower facilities available and if students wish to use them they will need to bring a towel. The Hermitage Sports Council

The school has a very successful Sports Council which was set up in 2006. The council has representatives from all year groups and they are actively involved in several projects over he past year. These include sponsored events, which have raised money for charity, as well as for new equipment and coaching opportunities for students at the Hermitage.

In KS4 students have 4 lessons over the fortnight, 2 of which are core PE lessons whereby students opt into which sports they wish to cover, and 2 are JSLA (Junior Sports Leader Award). The JSLA provides students with a national qualification which will develop confident, communication and team work within students.

BTEC First in Sport

Students also have the option in their pathways choices to take BTEC PE which is the equivalent of two GCSE. Students are assessed throughout the course on course work and one on one interview.

The units include:

* Health and Safety

* Preparation for Sport

* The Body in Sport

* Sports Leadership Skills

* The Sports Performer

* Practical Sport

Leadership opportunities

As well as completing the JSLA, students will also have the opportunity to be involved with a variety of other leadership courses including netball young leaders and the leadership academies.
